How hard is it to put a rebuild kit in a 94 JEEP G.C.L trans its qaudra trac also ?

I have done alot of like changing motors, trans ,transfer cases, heads, waterpumps, manifolds, brakes,鈥? and alot of other stuff but just not sure of all the clutch plates, seals, orings and the rest of it any advise or anything about doing it your self.THANKSHow hard is it to put a rebuild kit in a 94 JEEP G.C.L trans its qaudra trac also ?
Pick up a rebuild manual for that type of trans, it will show you step by step how to do it. there will be a few tools to buy in order to set differant components to specs. Sounds like you know how to wrench, The kits are around 350.00 bucks, that a cheap fix if you do it yourself. good luckHow hard is it to put a rebuild kit in a 94 JEEP G.C.L trans its qaudra trac also ?
For me, it would be really close to impossible to put a rebuild kit in a Jeep or any other vehicle. For you it doesn't sound like it would be hard at all.

I don't get this maths question - bearings - please help!?

I am not looking for the answer, but for an explanation on how to do it - this was on my specimen paper and I do not get how to do it!

It says...

A ship leaves port %26amp; sails on a bearing of 130 for 3km. The ship then changes course and sails on a bearing of 240 for 7 km. Calculate the distance of the ship from the port (marked a on the diagram).

Then there's a diagram (please excuse my drawing):

http://i44.tinypic.com/11tswnq.jpgI don't get this maths question - bearings - please help!?
You have accurately described the ship's path in your diagram so you know the two sides of a triangle (3km %26amp; 7km) and the included angle (70 degrees). I'm not sure what level you are at but given this information and some basic trigonometry you should be able to calculate the third side of the triangle, i.e. the distance from the port (6.6 km?)I don't get this maths question - bearings - please help!?
tbh i was about to ask the same question cos i dont have the slightest clue on how this works.

soz i cant help.

A cosine and sine question with bearings?

Hey i'm finding this question difficult=

Debbie runs 8km on a bearing of 310 degrees.

She stops, changes direction and continues running for 10 km on a bearing of 55 degrees.

Find the distance and bearing on which Debbie should run to return to her starting point.

I know how to draw the triangle and how to use the cosine and sine rules, i just don't know how to interpret them into the question. Could someone explain i've been trying for hours :)A cosine and sine question with bearings?
These problems can be done by solving a triangle. You should have no problem finding the magnitude of the resultant. It is, however a vector problem, with all angles drawn from north. The initial side of the angle is on the y-axis and the angle is opened clockwise. With that in mind the component vectors are added attaching them tail to head. Debbie should run the reverse direction of the Resultant.

The problem can be done by adding these numbers in polar coordinates.

(8, 310) + (10, 55) = (8.5,115.5 )

Debbie needs to run: 8.5 km with bearing 295.5

I added the vectors in polar form with a graphing calculator as complex numbers in polar form r*e^(螛i). You can convert to rectangular form for adding, then convert your answer back to polar form.A cosine and sine question with bearings?

How to make my longboard [skateboard] go faster?

okay, im new to longboarding and i would like to know without actually changing any parts and buying new parts for my board, what are some ways to set it up to make it go faster?

ex..have your bearings tightened/loosened a certain amount or /loosen or tighten trucks

anything helps seeing how new I am to the sport so i appreciate your advice -I really have no idea what i should be doingHow to make my longboard [skateboard] go faster?
You cant really do that. You would have to buy new bearings if you want your board to go faster.

If you have your bolts around the bearings too tight, the wheels wont move. If you have them too loose, they might fall off eventually.

Tightening the trucks will not increase your speed, but it will keep you from getting speed wobbles if you are going fast. If you go fast, I would suggest tightening them.

So the only way to make the board go faster is to get new bearings and standing in the speed stance (you should know what that is, but if you don't, its the stance that racers use so they are more aerodynamic)How to make my longboard [skateboard] go faster?
im new to longboarding to!

one thing that you can do is to take out your wheels and spray silicon or some 'anti-friction type thing' on to the pegs where your wheels go. you can also do this to your bearings (little O shaped things in your wheel)

this will cause for less friction and you will go faster

also like jason m said do the speed stance. to do the speed stance basically just do anything to make less air friction

ex. bend your knees, keep your arms at ur sides, etc.

Spray your bearings with grease or oil, you don't have to take anything apart, just don't use WD-40, because it sucks. This makes your bearings run smother, giving you a faster ride. Also, if your wheels are screwed down really tight you your trucks, that slows you down, try loosening it but not to much because when you're riding you might lose a wheel because the vibration of your board while riding down can shake your screw off.How to make my longboard [skateboard] go faster?
you can make a board go faster by reducing friction. this is hard to do without changing out parts. the bearings are obviously very important. Wheels can also affect top speed. But the biggest source of friction comes from the road you're riding on. New, smooth asphalt is MUCH faster than old pitted asphalt. concrete is fastest of all but when it starts to heave and crack it becomes totally unrideable.

One way to pick up alot of speed is to ride hills with an increasing gradient. (hills that get steeper as they go on) Since it takes time to acquire speed, if you're already going really fast you can get to terminal velocity for that gradient much quicker.

when i rode I was more concerned with making my board slower; maybe the hills are bigger where i live. Anyways, be careful; don't hurt yourself.
i would get some Bones speed cream. Or any specially formulated skateboard bearing lube. DOnt usee WD-40, like the person above me said b/c it will eventually attract dust and dirt and slow down ur bearings.

Axle seals/bearings in a Ford 9';.?

I have a 1980 Mustang Cobra. All I know is that it has a 9'; rear end (stock was 8.8), and the rear wheels are setup for 5 lug now, not 4. The axle seal is leaking on the brakes, so it needs to be changed. How do I go about changing the seal? I have heard to just unbolt the axle, and slide out.. and I have also heard the yoke needs to be removed. Which is it? Does anyone have a write up or pictures on how to do this?

Sorry I am complete beginner on rear ends!Axle seals/bearings in a Ford 9';.?
On a 9'; Ford diff the axle is not retained by an internal clip. You need to remove the brakes to get to the bearing plate behind the axle flange, it is held on by 4 bolts. Remove these and you can pull the axle out of the tube ( can be very hard pull to remove). The axle will come out and you will see the bearing and seal mounted on the axle and a retainer ring. You will need a press and the proper puller plates to press the retainer off the axle to remove the bearing and seal. You then install new seal and everything goes on in reverse order. If you do not have the proper tools take it to a garage and have it done.Axle seals/bearings in a Ford 9';.?
you remove the wheel, and the drum until you are up to the axle. you then remove the cover of the rear end mound at the middle and remove either a half moon wedge or a clip. Then you remove the axle from the rear end. Take off the bearing from the axle and replace the new seal. Clean up everything with brake cleaner. If the brake shoes are needed replace them. But replace on both wheels. Reinstall in reverse order and don't forget to put new grease on the bearing.
When you need to purchase new wheel bearings or seals, go to http://mibearings.com and fill out the form on the right side of the page. If you only want new seals (not bearings), add in the notes that you just want seals. They will look-up seals for your car and email you back with a price and a link. Also, you will need to tell them the stock size, and as much info as you can. Maybe give them the link to this page.

I hope that helps a little, good luck!
You better get a CHILTONS manual or you will be in big trouble

How do i wire an o2 sensor on a 51 plate hyundai coupe?

had to change the engine as the big end bearings went in the old one. The connectors for the o2 sensors were different so we had to change the plugs over but the wiring colours are different on the car compared to that on the sensor. On the sensor i have 1 black, 1 grey and 2 white wires and on the car there is 1 yellow, 1 brown, 1 red with a white stripe and 1 green with a white stripe. Need to know which wires go together. How do i wire an o2 sensor on a 51 plate hyundai coupe?

you will have to get new sensors for them to work with the computer.....im assuming you replaced the computer as well? if not you might have to. the engine is probably a year or 2 older or newer and so not all the sensors will be the same. Good luck

Can you help me determine a car engine issue??

I have a 2001 Chevy Cavalier (2.2L). For a while I had been experiencing the oil light coming on if I was coming to a stop at a red light/stop sign. As soon as I would press the gas the light would go out and stay out until I came to a stop again.I changed my oil last weekend and the light came on fewer times in the last week than ever before. When I came home from work yesterday I noticed a knocking from the engine compartment that worsened if I pressed the gas.I called around for advice and was told to change my oil back to 10W-30 from the 5W-30 I had put in last weekend. I did..No change.I called around again for advice and was told these things 1)Main bearings are worn and needs replacement,2)Rocker Arm issue,3)Keep driving it should ';work itself out';. What could the problem be based on what I have said and how much could I expect to pay for a repair? Feel free to verify information or ask additional questions to clarify if need. Thanks in advance!!Can you help me determine a car engine issue??
How many miles are on it? Is there any big oil leaks anywhere? Did you change the filter along with the oil? Is it a knocking sound or a tapping/ticking sound? Knocking may be unrelated and come from cheap gas. Ticking/Tapping may be from bearings and/or lifters.

Your oil pump may be getting ready to fail, in which case I would not drive it until getting it fixed. Or, you may have loose wires on the oil pressure sensor.

In any case, I wouldn't hope ';it works itself out.'; Your car is trying to tell you something and ignoring it won't make it better. Can you help me determine a car engine issue??
A brand new crate motor should be what your looking for. You did not state how many miles the old engine has. That 2.2 is a very simple engine not much can go wrong, however unfrequent oil changed dirty air filters things wear out. Knocking alone is bad enough but combine that with low oil pressure.. AS FOR ADVICE. Put a Bottle Lucas oil thickener in that engine park right next to the car lot let the car cool down trade it in the next morning.
well my guess would be you didn't fill it enough. but you could have a oil pump going out if it keeps showing low oil pressure. the knocking could be the main bearings which would be a major fix. but if its the rocker arms it will be more of a loud clicking sound in the top of the motor. if the knock isn't that bad yet you could try to add some lucas oil stabilizer to the oil and it may quiet it up a bit. if it is the rocker arms, then they can be tightened down but if its the main bearings then they will slowly get worse till you have to get it fixed. also i would recomend using the 10w-30 or 10w-40 and not the 5w-30. my car used to have a knock and cylinder leakage but i always fill it with 20w-50 and it runs great, but don't try this in your car, mine is a 92' and i just do that to squeeze a little more life outta it. do you have an oil pressure gauge or is it just a lite? cause a lite could just mean low oil or it could mean low oil pressure. i would get it checked out though
You've run the engine low on oil for too long. That was the original reason the light was coming on when stopping. Starving the oil pump and bearing of oil for as long as you did has led to a much worse problem. You are most likely looking at rebuilding/replacing the engine. Dropping the oil pan and replacing the rod and main bearings may get you another year or two of engine life but unless you do it yourself, will be expensive. Lights on the dash are warning lights.
sounds like youve got a clearance problem somewhere... when metal heats it expands and leaves less clearance, so when cold itll make more noise than when warm. usually the valvetrane is what makes a noise that will go away. your lifters may be going bad (theyre about 150 dollars for the lifters and gaskets needed to replace them, and probably 600 for labor... but if youre having oil pressure issues like that id say its time for a full rebuild or an engine swap.

any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.!!!!!!!!I would like to know what is involved in changing the steering rack gaiter on my 1990 mitsubishi space wagon?
guide for replacing the steering rack gaiter.

remove the road wheel

remove the split pin on track rod end

crack off the 17 mm lock nut

undo the 17 mm castle nut on the track rod end

un wind the track rod end counting how many turns

undo the cable tie and spring clip securing the gaiter

replace gaiter and refit all bit in the reverse order recountiong the threads as you refit the track rod end.

the wheel bearings are not adjustable and i would not consider this a diy job.

if you book the car into a garage expect to pay

0.5 hr for rack gaiter

2.0 hr for a front wheel bearing

0.5 hr for a rear wheel bearing

btw

Help, Is this a bad CV shaft causing the problem? Or is it transmission, clutch, bearings, shifter,..?

1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS w/ 89k miles. I was driving up north and there was a huge dip in the road, huge. I didnt see it until the last second and ended up hitting it at 60 MPH. My GF hit her head on the ceiling and I think the car actually may have gotten off the ground. I drove it home a few days later after i was done up north, and put it in the garage, to scared to drive it. Started it the other day, and it whined in neutral some, and starting to in more gears. I thought low tranny fluid so I changed it myself. While the car was on the jack, I started it in neutral, and the wheel spins in neutral. It will stop spinning though as soon as i push down on the clutch. as soon as i take it off though, boom, spins up again. Car WILL NOT move when in gear. While I was under the car changing the fluid, I noticed that the innner CV boot was torn to hell and no grease AT ALL left in it. Anyone tell me more about how to check linkages, I have heard linkage problem is possible also! Thanks!Help, Is this a bad CV shaft causing the problem? Or is it transmission, clutch, bearings, shifter,..?
    Dear Spirited Driving Experience-

I would say that you might have a clutch issue. If you hit as hard as you say you did then you might have damaged the T/O Bearing and some other parts in the clutch. But you also state that you were able to drive it home.

Well that tells me a couple of things. First is that you may have actually destroyed the clutch coming home. Especially if it will not go into gear now.

But I think that you have some more work to do to and that could involve getting a new transaxle, (transmission) for your car.

As for the CV Shaft, my advise to you is to replace both of them at the same time. When one goes, the other is shortly following. So start with a pair of remanufactured ones and you should be good to go there.

However its going to be the clutch and possible transmission work that concerns me.

My suggestion is to have the car towed down you your local Import Shop or over to Mistubishi and let them have a good look.

If my instincts are correct, you may have also damaged some of the syncronizers in the transmission. These are the parts that actually put the car into gear to make it move when you release the clutch

They are little brass star looking rings that slide back and forth on the shafts in the transmission. If the little teeth on them get damaged the car will not go into gear, or it may get locked there and they will get stripped out

Because of the special tools that are needed for manual transmission work, I would really suggest that you have a transmission shop or Mitsubishi have a look at it.

Sorry for the bad news, but I hope that helps you out!Help, Is this a bad CV shaft causing the problem? Or is it transmission, clutch, bearings, shifter,..?

    go to the dealer
You can obtain a code reader from a local parts store or tool sales outlet, usually for under $100 depending on your location. The vehicle shouldn't set any codes unless you tamper with electrical systems. A positive way to prevent this is to disconnect the negative battery cable, always negative first or you may set the antitheft on the vehicle.

Knocking from Vauxhall Omega front wheel?

A sound seems to have appered from the front drivers side wheel area on my Omega. It only ';knocks'; when going over rough ground areas. Could this be the bearings or CV joint and can anyone advise on how to change these ??? THANKSKnocking from Vauxhall Omega front wheel?
I would say examine the lower arm ball joint and bush, tie rod end ball joint and bush and the damper (shock absorber). My gut instinct if I started getting this in my vehicle would be lower arm ball joint or bush. These items are usually inspectable with the wheel off and the car jacked up. The Omega is a heavy vehicle so a worn balljoint would not be unexpected however Vauxhall/ Opel garage would replace the whole lower arm if this was the case. It is possible to replace just the ball joint though.

CV joint test is clicking or if bad knocking from the wheel when on full lock- usually worse on full lock driving backwards, but it does not sound like classic CV joint problem. Bearings would make noise most of the time regardless of rough ground or not.Knocking from Vauxhall Omega front wheel?
Sounds like the strut. You would need a compression tool to fix this.

Are my tires out of alignment or do I need new bearings?

OK, I have a 97 Civic EX. I've owned it for about a year now, and the previous owner took very little care of the car. The front wheels were worn to the wire (while the back tires still looked almost new), and he blew the engine because he never changed the oil.

Since I've gotten the car, in addition to having the engine rebuilt, I've had to put in a new slave cylinder, a new battery, new front tires, and of course keeping the oil changed.

For the last little while (maybe 3-5 months), when I drive on the highway at higher speeds (55+) I notice the front end shaking a lot. I also hear a repetitive medium-pitched whirr coming from the tires, that is in sync with the shaking.

Given what I have told you, does it sound like out of alignment wheels or bad bearings? My grandfather who really knows nothing about cars says bad bearings, but I'm thinking it's alignment since the previous owner took very poor care of the car and the two tires I bought are still on the front, they haven't been rotated. Year-old tires on the front, who knows how old tires on the back.

The car has about 92k miles.

Thanks! Are my tires out of alignment or do I need new bearings?
New tires that shake at certain speeds are generally out of balance, or out of round. Take the car to a shop that does front end alignment and tell them about everything you have in the third paragraph. A competent front end technician will know how to check for tires being out of round, out of balance, and bad wheel hubs. Just don't take it back to the place that sold you the tires. They will tell you there is nothing wrong with the tires. Are my tires out of alignment or do I need new bearings?
alignment does not shake it wil pull left or right shake most like tire out of balance or brake rotors warp but then you hear a whirl then could be bearing really if you been driving it pass 3 to 5 months like that your not doing a great job taking care of it either
Well, it cannot hurt to take it to a wheel alignment shop. It is like not going to cost a fortune. They will also be able to determine where the shaking is coming from(or the reason for it) If they say your wheels need balancing - they don't do that stuff so you take it elsewhere. But your steering shock may be hooped. They will be able to see that and replace it as well. You may have worn steering parts which the wheel alignment people can see as well and advise as well as to the costs of that. If it is a bearing thing, they also know that stuff too. Go to a specialty wheel alignment shop to get the job done right. Joe's garage just does not cut it.
I don't think it is the bearings. Bad Wheel bearings usually cause more of a grinding noise.

The first thing I would do is get an alignment. That seems to be you problem.
    bad strut
You balanced the front tires when you installed them, right? Ok, anything here will be guesses, so take it in to a shop and have a complete suspension check, and alignment check. That will normally identify repairs needed.

Could be bearings, ball joints, struts, tie rod ends, steering rack etc...

How Unusual for wheel bearings to fall out of my mini van?

I was parked in a parking lot, pulled back out of the spot and heard this terrible crunching like I was driving over something metal. A man was walking toward me and said a ball bearing just fell out of my mini van ( a Chrysler Town %26amp; Country 2005).

Could not move the car forward or back a good samaritan help push it back in the spot found 3 more ball bearings ( or wheel bearings?)

Called to have it towed, will find out the damage tomorrow.

How unusual is this to happen, no noise or problems just before the bearing fell out, was driving fine. I have 31,000 miles on the car, get the oil changed every 3,000 miles. In fact was in getting oil changed at 30,000 miles, should the mechanic been able to see this problem?

I've just never heard of this happening before. I hope its covered under warranty since I haven't had it 3 years and its under 36,000 miles but I don't know for sure.

Any info on this would be welcomed.

CMHow Unusual for wheel bearings to fall out of my mini van?
Relax, you are 100% covered by the 3 year/36k warranty, it wont cost you a cent. It is very unusual for 31k, sounds like the inner cv joint went out. Take it back to the dealer and they will fix it for no charge. How Unusual for wheel bearings to fall out of my mini van?
thats unusual , the bearings cant fall out unless a big nut is unscrewed
very unusual for that to happen. Are you talking about the wheel bearings?
Well sometimes with kids and a radio you may not have heard the early warning sounds. Been a mechanic for 35 years, only seen this happen three or four times, but it happens. Unless you have an exceptional warranty I don't think it will be covered. Some people that change oil don't drive the vehicle long enough to here a problem such as this one. Sorry! no good news.
That vehicle has unit bearings that are the sealed type. If the wheel bearing gave up that bad, you would not be able to push it . Probably the CV joint gave up. Should be covered under warranty. Did you hear any clicking noises while making a sharp, slow speed turn? That's an indicator of the CV joint going bad.

Where can i find/buy books on what to charge to repair a car/truck?

my dad just opened an auto repair shop and he wants to know how much to charge for repairs. he has worked as a repair man for 20 years but for someone else. now he doesnt want to overcharge or undercharge. i want to buy a book or magazine or cd rom or anything that can tell us what would be a good price to charge for anything ranging from changing brakes to painting an entire car. also he wants some computer programs that show you the entire structure of the car like in the car dealerships. something that tells you exactly where every part (i.e. rotors, ball bearings, gaskets, etc) are located in the car. thank you very much for your help.Where can i find/buy books on what to charge to repair a car/truck?
I hope you have a BIG budget for what you are asking for. There is only one set of do it all software like you are asking for / about, and it is NOT cheap for everything (we paid 3K per year for the autobody ONLY)

Are my bearing bad? Are they hard to change?

Hi, i just purchased a 1999 cbr600 f4 a few weeks ago and i rode it for the first time last weekend. I noticed that the back wheel felt a little sloppy (like it wobbled a little bit) so i got off the bike and i could just move the tire a little bit with my hand.

Do the bearings in the rear wheel need to be replaced or is it safe to ride on it like this? Could it be something else? If they do need to be replaced could you help me as to how i would go about doing that. Thanks! Are my bearing bad? Are they hard to change?

item106 is Wheel Bearings..Are my bearing bad? Are they hard to change?
It is definitely NOT safe to ride in its current condition. You need to check and correct the cause of the problem: It could be the wheel bearings, or the swing-arm bearings. I'm assuming that the rear axle is properly tightened. First, you need the service manual for your year/model of bike. There are too many steps and too many specifics (i.e. torque values for reassembly) to learn it all online.
Be careful! I wouldn't ride it in this condition if I were you and if you absolutely HAVE to ride very slowly. Sounds like you have either a loose swing arm / rear triangle or your axel just needs to be tightened.

Get this checked out asap or if u feel competent enough try to make sure everything is tight back there.

Good luck with the fix :)
Bearings are the likely culprit, it need not be just the wheel bearings though, it could also be the swingarm bearings.

If you can notice a problem when riding they are probably completely shot and are not safe to ride with.

But first check the easy bits, tyre pressure, chain adjustment, fasteners tightened (to the correct torque).

How would I change the wheel bearing on my 1993 Saturn SL2?

I am pretty much a diy guy for everything. I slid my car into a curb a long time ago and replaced a lot of parts. Unfortunately my wheel bearing was off, and caused the front passenger wheel to go completely bald down to wires. I, like a fool, decided maybe it would be good to have a ';professional'; that a friend referred me to handle this one. I like doing my own work so that I know what all I did, and I can usually trace it back. This guy was very unprofessional, called me angrily saying he needed more money because apparently the half-shaft for an automatic is different than a manual (my car). He said that would need to be replaced, and a spindle (which should've came with it, as it came from a junkyard). Anyways, I continued this foolish game. When it was all finally done, he brought the car to me (the shop was just down the street), and I drove him home. I noticed the wheel was making a rubbing noise, and he said it was nothing, and it should go away. I drove it around for a while, but I have a different car that I had been driving instead (the a/c works). Months later, I decided to drive the saturn around and it is still making this rubbing noise. One of the motor mounts had been rotted, and I replaced it, which helped a lot, but the wheel is still making this rubbing noise. I am pretty sure it is not rubbing against anything, but it is hard to tell because the ';professional'; put the tire back on with an impact wrench and I can't get the wheel off. Any ideas? If it is the wheel bearing...how would I replace it? I believe they are sealed bearings, but I'm not sure if it needs to be pressed out or if I could hammer it out and a new one in.How would I change the wheel bearing on my 1993 Saturn SL2?
if your going to change the bearing, i,ll tell you the way i do it. i pound the old bearing out and i put the new bearing in the freezer and when i,am ready for it, it will slip right in. steel will shrink when they are cold and expand when it warms up. buy the bearing, put it in the freezer for about a day or 2, pound the bearing out, take the new bearing and put it in a ice chest and when your ready for it, it should slip right in where the old 1 came out. i did that several times. How would I change the wheel bearing on my 1993 Saturn SL2?

Help needed with tricky maths puzzle question. bearings, degrees, Pythagoras,?

A ship sails from a harbour on a bearing of 072掳 to a buoy 12 Km away. Then it changes direction and sails 20 Km to a lighthouse due East of the harbour.

Answer A: On what bearing does the boat sail from the buoy to the lighthouse (to the nearest degree)?

Answer B: How far is it from the lighthouse back to the harbour?Help needed with tricky maths puzzle question. bearings, degrees, Pythagoras,?
Whoever set that does not know the difference between a Bearing and a Course. Ships do not 'sail on bearings', they 'follow a course'.

Also they do not 'change direction', they 'alter course'.

I do not like Km either. They should be nautical miles.

The angle at the harbour between the ship's initial course and the lighthouse is 18 degrees.

You now have a triangle with 2 sides (12 and 20) and an angle between the 12 side and the unknown distance side (18 degrees).

You can solve what you want using the Sine Rule.

Course from buoy to lighthouse = 102 degrees

Distance lighthouse to harbour = 32Km

It's obviously slightly more than 32 but if you are not giving a totally accurate answer to the course there is no point in giving a totally accurate answer to any other calculated value.Help needed with tricky maths puzzle question. bearings, degrees, Pythagoras,?

Can bad bearings heatup the front wheels of my civic 1981?

Hello all, I drive a 1981 civic fourdoor hatch back. Recently encountered a problem. My car is front wheel drive, I noticed that both the front wheels are getting extremely hot in normal running.

Mine is right hand drive and firstly the left front wheel gets extremely hot and then the right one.

Inorder to fix this problem I first changed the brake hose pipe but that didn't fix the problem, I then checked the callipers and they were free as well but my mechanic still lubricated them. Finally I checked the brake's master cylinder and changed the washers in it but still no change in the condition.

Now I cannot figure out what else to do as there is no burning of pads or anything related to braking but how ever once the wheels get hot then only the braking fluid gets hot and I have also noticed that the lug nuts are hotter as compared to the wheel hub itself.

Please let me know what are the factors that are causing this. I shall be thankful. Can bad bearings heatup the front wheels of my civic 1981?
If the bearings were that bad and dried out, they'd be so noisy you couldn't hear the radio. It's more common for dragging brakes to make this kind of heat. Can bad bearings heatup the front wheels of my civic 1981?
when you took the wheels of have you noticed any oil/ grease on the inside? possibility the wheel seals are bad and thus cause the bearings to go bad , i would not run the car any further the bub will get hot and bust off then you going down the road on 3 wheels
The bearings could cause the wheel to get hot, but the chances of both bearings being bad causing this symtom are slim to none. The master is bad or the push rod from the booster is improperly adjusted.

Daewoo Cielo 1.5 DOHC ,damaged bearings, still working very strong?

I have a Daewoo Cielo 1.5 DOHC with 183000 Km on clock. Recently I noticed a strange knocking sound from engine. First I was suspicious about head cylinder ,then I found out the sound is louder when engine is under the load. So it should be bearings.

It happened 4 weeks ago and exactly after I changed the engine oil with Castrol Magnetic 10W40 which is thin oil.

Last week I again changed the with thick one (Shell 25W60) no the knocking sound is better but still exist (especially above 2200 rpm).I think it is one of the bearings which is damaged.

It is not worth to open the engine because the car itself is 2000$.I have 10 months of rego of car.So I want to know what should I do to increase the life of engine to the end of rego (Next 10 months).

I have started driving in low rpm.Since this engine has a good low end torque and also very high turqe compare with other 1.5 engines. It is a manual and I go to fifth gear at speed of 60 to 70Km/h and still engine is strong and accelerating.

Please tell how long I can drive with damaged bearings in low rpm and with thick oil?

    Daniel

DANIEL there's no way to know....thick oil might muffle the noise but its not fixing the issue...chances are its a rod bearing....for the price of a gasket and a bearing it may be your best bet to chance it....good luck

Heater/cooling fan on car makes screaming noise. how do i change it?

Ok, I own a pontiac grand prix (1999) the fan that provides heating and cooling starts screaming at me randomly. It sounds terrible and then the heat will stop coming. I turn it off and then back on and it works fine for a few minutes. It's the fan right? Bearings are bad or something. Anyone know how much for a new one? I will check autozone or something. How hard would it be to change? Anyone know of a website that would provide a ';how to'; to change it?

How hard is it to change the fork seals on a 2005 YZ 125?

I'm not the best mechanic but I'd like to learn how to change the seals myself since this is the 3rd time the seal is leaking and the closest shop is an hr away and charges pretty good. What tools do I need, I know I'm going to have to pick up a torque wrench and a fork wrench and I've already got the suspension fluid but anyways again I'm 19 and I know how to replace steering bearings and put a new piston and rings and such in a bike so you think this would be a hard task? How hard is it to change the fork seals on a 2005 YZ 125?
If you can replace a piston and rings, then you should be able to replace the seals. The best thing you can do it to purchase a shop manual for your bike and then go for it.

With this being the third time the seal is leaking, it makes me believe that something else is going on with the fork.

I would not only replace the seals, but the upper and lower fork bushings as well. You can purchase a kit from pivot works.

What can happen with the fork is this...if there is slack from wear in the bushings, the fork leg can actually distort the fork seal to where fork oil can slip out past the seal, even if you have brand new seals. This sounds like what is going on with you.

Oh, and don't forget the ';best answer'; feature on each question you asked ...thanks.

How hard to change Ford 1992 E350 front brake lines?

I have done the rest of the steel lines at one time or another but now I must change the front. I am ok with the drivers' side but where is the line that runs from the drivers side flexible line over to the passenger side? I cannot seem to see it. I am also ok with bleeding the lines and double flaring but the line location has me stumped. The line change is because the steel line in question split when I bled the left caliper. It was frozen and I changed it along with the rotor and pads. The right side is ok but I put the new pads on anyway like you are supposed to do. They also call for the spindle nut to be set at 75 ft/pounds, then backed off 1/2 turn, then retorqued to 17 to 25 inch pounds. Is all that really critical? When I removes the old rotor it seemed to have some lateral freeplay (1/16th ?). At this time I do not have a torque wrench that small. The inner and outer bearings are new. I did it the book way before but I do not want to buy a dial torque wrench($250). THANKS!How hard to change Ford 1992 E350 front brake lines?
First, you don't need a dial torque wrench for inch pounds. You can buy an inexpensive click wrench. Of course they're not as accurate as the expensive ones. But they're a heckofa lot better than guessing. And yes, bearing torque IS critical.

The brake line does NOT run from the driver's side to the passenger side. You have a split system. That means the front left and right rear are on the same circuit and the right front and left rear are on the other circuit. That's why you're not finding the passenger side line by looking at the driver's side.

About how much would it cost to replace a locked up motor in a 1999 accord lx?

Changed starter and battery need to know price tag to fix bearings in motor or replace it.About how much would it cost to replace a locked up motor in a 1999 accord lx?
Pardon me for backing up in this, but from the description I'm not sure you've really established the motor is seized. If you put a socket on the crank bolt and try to turn the engine (always CCW in that vintage of Honda, like you're loosening the bolt) and it feels like you are trying to turn a big solid chunk of metal, it is indeed seized. Don't worry about the bolt actually coming loose - believe me, people pray to foreign gods that they could get that bolt loose!

If it is seized, I think others will have some good sources. A used motor from a wrecking yard would be a good bet but I don't know the labor cost for it.

    Wheel Bearings?

How do you change the wheel bearing in a 1999 ford Escort front wheel drive,is it easy or are they pressed on and have to be serviced somewhere.Wheel Bearings?
Well you need the special tools to do the work. Such as a big inpack wrench. A Slap-hammper with wheel adapter to put the fub apart. Bearing puller. And the proper tools to put it back together. Otherwise the drive axle could damage. And you need the tools to remoce the races. And installing tool or a press with the proper dies. The are best done in a shop with right tools. There are some model you hap to replace whole unit. The there is a real safety question. Cause you hap to take presure off the a fram.Wheel Bearings?
if i'm not mistaken, the front end bearings are part of the hubs, meaning that they are pressed in the hubs. U have to remove the rotors, and also remove the steering knuckles. then send the steering knucles to a machine shop to have the bearings replaced.
    Hydraulic press is needed.

Help with Bearings Ball joints and tie rod for escalade?

I had a bump in my 04 ESV and was getting the Stability control message. Today I went to the dealer and they told me the front bearings were very loose. Left upper and lower ball joints are loose. Right front inner tie rod end is loose and boot is torn. They quoted 1708 for parts and 1162 for labour total with tax 3330$. I found parts cheaper from part source and on ebay but wondered if it is difficult to change this myself.

Any help would be great some instruction how to change these parts.

    Thanks for any help.

04 escalade esv with 200,000km. standard wheelsHelp with Bearings Ball joints and tie rod for escalade?
I'll second Richards response! This is not a job you want to tackle. There are specialty tools required and an alignment needs to be done after the parts are replaced. The dealer quote seems really high to me as well. Try to find a reputable independent shop and have them inspect the vehicle and give you an estimate. Don't tell them what the dealer told you or found. See if they find and recommend the same items be replaced. You should also have them show you the parts and explain why they are bad. You do need to be prepared to pay them for their time in inspecting your vehicle and writing an estimate if you do not have them do the repairs.Help with Bearings Ball joints and tie rod for escalade?
    no very easy.
Easy for some, difficult for others. Buy yourself a shop manual or a Haines Manual. It will help you step by step. Hope you also have the necessary tools.
Not to be an *** here, but if you had to ask that question, you probably shouldn't. Unless you have a friend who is a whiz at mechanical things.
You said front bearings are very loose, these are sealed bearings and require a press to change them. Inner tie rod bad, can be removed by striking the mount collar hard or a fork splitter. Ball joints require a ball joint press to remove and install them and an alignment should be done when all parts are replaced. These are not the usual back yard mechanic type repairs. Speciality tools are required and I doubt that you have them. The cost you mentioned is high, suggest you get another estimate from an independent shop.

  • Got a 2005 toyota corolla that has a 1.8 liter engine, how long do you think the engine might last?

Bought the car new to save on fuel, its now got 191,144 miles on the engine. The oil is changed every 3,000-3,500 miles. had a service station performing it until the warranty ran out and then I

took over the oil change myself where I use Castrol High Mileage oil and fram toughguard filter 3x

occasionally use the fram toughguard 6x.

I run 93 octane in it religiously, every so often will run a injector, valve cleaner in it. Never had any engine problems yet, infact the only thing being changed is the oil,oil filter, air filter, cabin air filter and spark plugs, got some 4 prong bosch 8 dollar a piece plugs in it and have only serviced the

    trans once in 191,144 miles.

Im thinking the engine will make it 500,000 miles but the timing belt has never been change nor the water pump or anything else for that matter. should I be concerned or just let the thing drive like it is?

I did have to replace the wheel bearings front and back and change out a fuel pump but other than

500 dollars on non engine matinence, its been a good damn car.

got any ideas on how long the engine should last and does the 93 octane keep the sludge down and make it last longer?Got a 2005 toyota corolla that has a 1.8 liter engine, how long do you think the engine might last?
you are really doing an exceptional job maintaining your car but some of the things you are doing are an overkill. First off, unless your car's engine is tuned for 87 octane so running 93 is not only wasting money but over time but can actually decrease your fuel economy. Consider this: 1996 and newer cars have knock sensors to take care of low octane fuels. Also, your car has VVTi- which is basically VTEC. Honda gave it a label and markets it as such but practically every manufacturer has some form of it. It is designed to run on 87 octane so why waste your money on premium? You may think it improves things but in reality, it doesn't. Oc older cars, it would but newer cars, no unless that engine was designed to run on premium- which it's not. premium is considered cleaner burning but that's just because it burns faster. That's why every car you see that gets high mpgs have a manufacturers recommendation of 87 octane in their owner's manual. If this car is as well-maintained as you say then you don't even need high mileage oil. regular 5/30 and 10/30 will be fine.BTW, your corolla does NOT have a timing belt. It has a maintenance-free timing chain. 1997 was the last year a Corolla was made with a timing belt. keep up the good work and you should easily see 500,000 miles.Got a 2005 toyota corolla that has a 1.8 liter engine, how long do you think the engine might last?
Well it sounds like you take really good care of it so you should max out the life span of the engine! By the sounds of it, getting the 500K mileage doesn't seem to be out of the question! In reference to the timing belt, they recommend changing those every 60K miles so if I were to recommend anything, it would be to change that! If the belt breaks, it could cause some major, costly valve damage. Best of luck with it
If you continue taking care of your car, it could very well do 500k miles or more. However, the timing belt needs to be changed every 60,000 miles. If it breaks, it could wreck your engine, so you should change it at your earliest convenience. It would probably be a good idea to go ahead and change the water pump and thermostat at the same time.

As for gas, 93 octane is a waste of money for a regular 4-cylinder engine. 93 octane gas is formulated for high performance/high compression engines, and has no benefit for a regular engine. The oil you are using will do more to fight sludge than the fuel.
deffinity keep doing this and it will last forever easy. Premium fuel will NOT keep your sluge down but keep your car clean and MPG up. Its all in the oil you use and castrol is great stuff to use. Your car has a timing chain not a belt so you dont have to worry about that. Chains dont have to changed but with nearly 200k i would look into that. Even if you had a belt you would NOT change it at 60k like said by someone else. keep up with maintaince and it will last forever because its a TOYOTA
everyone is saying to change the timing belt at 60K but i have a 2004 and i though it had a timing chain. You may what to ask the dealer if it has a chain or belt?
change the timing belt every 90k miles, and those Toyota motors can go 300K miles

Bearings in motor are falling apart?

    Keep this simple.

    1. Got an oil change.

    2. When it was done mechanic tells me that flapping noise is the bearings falling apart/which means motor is falling apart.

    3. I was suppose to be driving 45 minutes out of town today, should I still go?

    4. or wait until taxes come back so i can get a new car?

    5. How long do you think before my motor completely shuts down? or whatever would happen to it, explain what would happen to it? explosion etc?

Car Type 2001 Saturn SC2 loved that car but i know it's time for a new one!Bearings in motor are falling apart?
If what you are hearing sounds like somebody banging on the engine with a hammer (not a small one, but one you'd use for home construction) you should avoid highway speeds. If you are hearing a lesser tapping you are good up to about 50 or 55 mph with no hard accelerations.

This brings us to the next phase - is the mechanic's diagnosis right? Rod knocks - the result of bearing failure - are pretty much unmistakable, but I wonder if the mechanic is being completely honest about it. A second opinion is in order before you decide where to spend money. If it is a rod knock the engine does not have much of a future. It will get you around town okay but higher engine speeds will indeed destroy the engine quickly in spectacular fashion - suddenly a connecting rod will break and will often poke a hole in the side of the engine, a process known as throwing a rod. If it is not a rod knock this bad scenario does not exist. Rod knocks are almost always the result of serious oil neglect, so if you have been good about oil changes you have reason to be dubious..Bearings in motor are falling apart?
You don't want to go anywhere because if the bearing go, you could blow a hole in the side of the block. All you need is new bearings. Take it to the saturn dealer and tell them u need new rods and mains (bearings). It is alot cheaper than a new engine. You might want to have it towed to be on the safe side.
Yes, your motor is Falling Apart. I also have some Swamp Land in the Arizona Desert that I would like to sell you. You need to take your car to a Certified Mechanic at an Automobile Dealer and have them do a Diagnostic Check. If you want to believe your Mechanic, then go right out and sell your car, or get the motor rebuilt, or See a Qualified Mechanic and find out what is really wrong if anything at all.

I have been driving cars and working on my own now for over 44 years, and have never heard such a thing. The Bearings in a motor, are flat curved pieces of metal that fit around the Crankshaft, and they do not fall apart. If they are worn, you will find metal shavings in your oil, and your oil may even be shiny.
Flapping noise??Bad bearings make a knocking noise in the lower end of the engine. If your bearings are going bad they can make the rod caps break and your engine will lock up.If you don't care about the car very much, you could try putting Marvel Mystery Oil or something similar in it(Lucas,STP,etc) in it and see if that'll quiet it down a little.Get another opinion on the problem if possible before you go any long distances.

No Oil Pressure.....Is it the Main Bearings ?

My 97 S-10 Blazer started tapping one day and now there is no oil pressure. I paid someone to change the oil pump and it's still doing it... now it sounds like a rod is knocking. What else could the problem be? The Main bearings????????? How hard is that to fix if so?No Oil Pressure.....Is it the Main Bearings ?
It sounds like you spun a bearing and it is eroding your crankshaft. It's only a matter of time before you throw a rod.

You have to have your crankshaft and bearings replaced. It's not cheap! No Oil Pressure.....Is it the Main Bearings ?
if the oil pump is driven by the distributor gear the shaft that connects them or the gear itself may be damaged. shouldn' t be the bearings though
Sounds like the oil pump or the cam gear that runs the oil pump failed. Either way, running an engine without adequate oil pressure can ruin both the rod bearings and the main bearings and ruin the crankshaft. Very expensive to fix since the engine needs a complete overhaul.
pistons are wore out, rings are old maybe or broke
Oil pressure system in any vehicle is not only the oil pump is also the seals on your pistons, you head, etc... Have a compression test done on the engine, and take it from there.

Out of all of those upgrades the air filter, spark plugs, and pvc valve would be easy for anyone to do so you wouldnt have to pay for labor if you knew someone that knows very little about engines. The PCV valve is under 10$ for the part, spark plugs (depending on what you want) run anywhere from 3-10$ per cylinder, and the air filter can run from about 20-50$. Of course im just going by what i know for the price of the part, not labor.
You can do all that yourself. All of that is easy stuff. But in a shop

about 20-30 bucks for a basic oil change

The air filter would be about 15 bucks labor

Inspection of brake lines shouldn't be much, replacing wouldn't be so bad.

Spark Plugs would probably be about 50-75 bucks labor then the plugs themselves

PCV valves take a while to go bad on newer vehicles. That's a simple check you can do yourself and it takes about 5 minutes. You don't even need tools for that one.

Don't forget trans fluid and filter change

    Radiator flush and refill

    Fuel filter

    Spark plug wires

    Tire inspection and balance
any dodge dealer or service station will give you an accurate quote on this , if it is 4 wheel drive you cannot clean and repack the bearings
oil change 25 to 35 dollars

spark plugs depinging on the kind you wont 20 to 120 dollars

    air fillter 20 or so

brakes if you need them 35 to 50

a good shop would inpect all the other thing for free note that if you take it to a dealer you will pay 2 or 3 time this

Does a problem with water pump bearings mean the water pump and timing belt needs to be replaced?

My '06 camry 4cylinder with 66K miles has been making a slight rumblings noise since Sunday. Leaving work today, I thought the car was going to die because the noise was very loud and persisted as I pressed on the gas. I had to go on the freeway and stayed to the right for fear that something would happen. It was weird but at some points on the freeway there was no noise at all and I could pick up speed to reach home. As I was getting an oil change yesterday, the technician stated that it sounds like a problem with my water pump bearings. The noise is coming from the area that has a belt spinning.

I don't want to get preyed on because I'm a woman with no obvious knowledge about cars. If its the water pump bearings will I need a new pump? Although its recommended to change the timing belt at the same time do I HAVE to? Any idea what the best case scenario (low cost) and worst case scenario for this is? How much time does one have to address this? A friend knows a mechanic 35 minutes away but im scared to drive that far and destroy the engine or something.I also have to get my transmission serviced and I'm seeing this car job costing 700+ due to the mention of timing belt. Any info about this would really be appreciate.Does a problem with water pump bearings mean the water pump and timing belt needs to be replaced?
Was it a loud high pitched noise or just a screeching noise? If it was a loud high pitched noise then it is your water pump and although it is not necessary to replace the timing belt because of the water pump, I would highly advise because:

    1. Yes, in most cases you have to take off the timing belt in order to get to the water pump and it would only cost a few dollars more.

    2. Your vehicle already has over 60K mi and if you look in your owner's manual it will state in the maintenance section to change the timing belt at this point.

However, given the mileage, I would think it a little unlikely that it is the water pump.

If the noise is just a screeching noise, get a can of Belt Dressing from and auto parts store and spray it on the inside of the serpentine belt (the belt that runs the alternator and other accessories) to see if that quiets the noise. You know what, on second thought, scratch that. I'm guessing it has never been replaced. Take your car to an auto parts store and have them look at the car, more specifically the serpentine belt. They can tell you what's wrong with the car. I'm guessing the serpentine belt or the power steering pump is low in fluid.Does a problem with water pump bearings mean the water pump and timing belt needs to be replaced?
uhhhhh i've never heard of changing a timing belt with changing a water pump so i'd say no to the timing belt. your timing belt keeps your engine valves, ignition synchronized it has nothing to do with the cooling system. best case do it yourself and prices all depend on the car. on my car which i did myself cost me around 35 dollars. worst case going to a toyota dealer and paying somewhere between 100-200 dollars for the part and maybe more for the labor. the timing belt is not the issue if the bearings are going out in a water pump UNLESS for some reason toyota decided to interconnect both things. but i doubt it. go to a different mechanic to get a diagnosis. Do not be pressured into buying anything.
No you don't have to. But;If you don't you may be paying more as you will have to pay for the same work again later. Best case is to change the belt now and be able to drive worry-free. If you aren't leaking anti-freeze yet; you can drive it to repair shop. But I would stay as much to the side roads as I could.

About 2 months ago I purchased a 8.3 engine Dodge SRT 10 for collection but then ............................?

A month ago in car carriages of my uncle I found 4 turbo compressors Alfa Romeo for 2.4 jtd that I bought to start a project crazy! I bought those turbo 4 and I made regenerate and at the same time I purchased a further 6 equal , in a new car spare (almost 鈧?12,000 of bills!)! and then I change the facts on spherical bearings all 10! After that, I bought 2 intercooler air / water from 15 litres the one and then I started assembling ... In practice I mounted 1 for each cylinder turbo (and also here expenditure crazy !)!... There I worked throughout the month and this morning around 2:45 I finished! Now, I just woke up there put the engine oil (10W60 with liquid additive ceramic power sports), coolant , But now ... I do not have the courage to put in motion !!!!! What do? So I have not made any adjustment will piston, it other mechanical ... According to you when you put in motion? How many horses will now? And how much torque? How many km will last? And how much more noise going? (Consider that is not mounted on any vehicle (even if my intention is to put it under a Alfa Romeo 156 if I find the place!) therefore is without discharges !!)!!!.....

Oh, almost forgot, excuse my English but still have to take confidence !!!!!.....

    Question about 1997 Ford Ranger?

My driver's front tire makes a squealing noise as I drive or make any left turns. If I turn the wheel to the right, it makes no noise. I changed the inner and outer bearings plus put on a new caliper. Nothing seems to get rid of the noise. I put on a new serpentine belt plus the power steering pump is brand new. Does anyone know what the problem could be and how I can fix the noise. It's annoying and I can't take it anymore. HELP?Question about 1997 Ford Ranger?
I know it might sound dumb but did you check if the tire is rubbing against the plastic guard??Question about 1997 Ford Ranger?
I'm thinking along the lines of an alignment issue. Maybe too much toe-out on the drivers side. The more the toe is out, then the more your dragging the tire down the road. If you turn the wheel to the right then you are straightening out the tire therefore it is not dragging. Just an educated guess.
I agree with the alignment as your problem. Though I would lean towards camber....either way, get the front end checked.

With 400,000 miles, it's living on borrowed time. I'm not saying that in a smart @$$ way either, just saying 400,000 is a lot of miles.I own a 1996 350 vortec motor in a chevy trk.bought it new, zero miles. swapped out fuel inj.sys.for a carb.?
I'd say your already past due.
Your lucky that Chevy even lasted 100,000 miles.....

Can you help this maths question on Bearings?

Simon travels 1414 m due North from the school then heads East for 1414 m. He finally changes the course and travels 5000m sw. His friend, Tom, is some distance from school and on the bearing SE from his school.

How far is Simon from the school finally

    b) What is Simon's final bearing from school

    c) Suppose Tom is due East of Simon, find the distance from Tom to the school

Can you help this maths question on Bearings?
Since Simon travels due north for the same distance as due east, when he goes southwest, he passes through the school. The plot of his path is a right triangle with the two sides = 1414 m. The distance that he travels to get back to the school is the hypotenuse of this right triangle.

Therefore Simon is exactly southwest of the school...%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;...first answer

Let c = the length of the hypotenuse in meters

    The Pythagorean Theorem states that:

    c^2 = sqrt[(1414)^2 + (1414)^2] = sqrt(1,999,396 + 1,999,396) =

    sqrt(3,998,792) = 1,999.698 m

(Note: Since the square root of 2 is usually approximated by 1.414, I suspect that whoever wrote this question wanted the length of 1414 to be approximated by 1000*sqrt(2), but that is only an approximation so I'll use the numbers that I computed.)

Since Simon traveled a total of 5000 m and 1999.698 was the distance that he traveled to the school, the distance that he traveled beyond the school is:

    5000 - 1999.698 = 3000.302

Since Tom is southeast of the school and east of Simon, this is another right triangle with the right angle based at the school and the distance from Tom to the school is:

    3000.302 m....%26lt;%26lt;%26lt;...Second answer

  • Is a rod bearing hard to change?

i own a ford f150 1997 and recently the rod bearing has gone on me.. im wondering how much a garage might charge me for this? is it something im able to do in my driveway? i have some experience with auto servicing but im not that fer miler with rod bearings. would it be cheaper to replace the bearing or pulling the engine and putting a different one in?Is a rod bearing hard to change?
Your going to have to tear the motor down to replace a rod bearing. Depending on how bad it is you might need a new crank... you wont know till you get in there and look.Is a rod bearing hard to change?
i would recommend replacing the engine. You could have too many issues arise after repairing the bearings.
I wouldn't recommend replacing just one rod bearing. All of them need to be replaced together. It is a big job to replace them. The crankshaft journals will probably need to be resurfaced before it can all be put back together. It is possible to replace the entire engine with a low mileage used one, cheaper than rebuilding the old one.
No the engine will need at least a bottom end overhaul.. new crank or at least have that one mic ed to make sure it is still round on the journals . It not it can be turned then you buy main bearings and rod inserts to fit the crank . it is just cheaper to buy a crank shaft kit . and save the machining and checking cost . I myself if had the money just replace the engine new or get that one completely rebuilt . about $2000. rebuild $3600 new .
honestly with your skill level, pull it.but hey dont throw the ol engine away.you may hav very cheaply.e to disassemble to repair.but its very possible.in your case a head will come off if you spun the bearing. if its just knocking, more than likely you can have the crank machined
It was easier in the old days, especially with four-bangers. Some engines allow rod-bearing access without pulling the engine. In that case, you still need to replace all the rod bearings, hone the cylinders, and re-ring the pistons.

If the bearing has taken the wear, and the crankshaft journals are not damaged, rod bearing inserts can buy you some time. Your oil pressure will go back up, extending the life of the engine. For a time.

In a modern engine, however, you'll probably need to pull the engine -- in which case the labor is extensive and it's not particularly cost effective to do just a simple rod-bearing insert job. Full rebuilds of this original engine will require the enlistment of a qualified machine shop at some point.

If the rod bearings are damaged, it's likely that the main bearings are also worn. Sooner or later, the engine will seize despite your efforts.

I'd go for a swap myself (I'm sick of rebuilding engines); and then I'd only do it if I knew the tranny and the rest of the vehicle is dependable. My experience with inserts on Volvo, Mitsubishi and Triumph engines was good: but every time I had a Ford engine rebuilt, the transmission failed within a few months.

    Good luck.
as you can see from the other answers it will cost about what the truck is worth to repair it.

the cheapest way would be to buy a used eng for a few hundred dollars and install it yourself.

if not you will end up spending as much as the truck is worth.

And a lot of work and a lot of time.

    your best 2 choices are

buy a used engine and install it yourself

    or

    this is a better option.

sell your truck for what ever you can get for it.

    And buy another used truck.

    http://www.edmunds.com/used/1997/ford/f1鈥?/a>

or go to to local sources like auto zone ,etc.

and see how much a rebuilt ';short block '; will cost.

then have a valve job done on your old heads and put them on the rebuilt short block and you would have a totally fresh eng.

I assume you know what a short block is.

It is a rebuilt block, new pistons, crank ,bearing etc.

and you use all the covers, oil pan ,heads etc.from your old eng.

How do i egt bearings out of a sealed wheel? (BMX)?

My bmx back wheel needs new bearings.. It is chrome and it seems to be a sealed wheel. The person i bought it off spent 150 Pounds on the wheel so i am not going to change wheels. Anyone know how ?How do i egt bearings out of a sealed wheel? (BMX)?
any hub that expensive should be able to be overhauled...

I've never seen one that doesn't hold the bearings in with cones. To open it up you'd need cone wrenches though.

I'd need a visual to tell you more

In this case I would take it to a bike shop, at least that way if anything goes wrong, it shifts the liability from you to them...How do i egt bearings out of a sealed wheel? (BMX)?
remove all axle hardware on one side of the hub and tap the axle through to the other side, bearings will move with the axle. Then just tap the remaining bearings out of the hub with a screwdriver or something similar.

Is it possible i have tetanus? how long do tetanus shots last?

I was changing out the wheel bearings on my 15 year old Trans Am and while removing one of the bolts with an Air gun, one of the bolts sliced into my finger (i was pressing the trigger and the washer part of the bolt spun into my finger at several hungred RPMS i'm sure).

the bolt was pretty rusty but I did spray it down with a rust penetrant minutes before... It sliced kind of deep but strangely didnt bleed. After I washed it with antibacterial soap i squeeze pretty hard and managed to get a drop of blood to come out. I want to stress that it WAS deep, but or some really bizarre reason it wasn't bleeding a lot.

I know I've had tetanus shots almost 10 years ago if not sooner. How long are they good for? Should I be worried? I put antibiotics on it.

It tingles a little bit which is a symptom of a tetanus infection but I also gotta figure that a cut is bound tingle or feel pain a little bit.Is it possible i have tetanus? how long do tetanus shots last?
Make sure it bleeds a lot then squeeze it, it's of course to late now. Then clean it with hot soapy water them an astringent and then to be sure if you want get a tetanus shot every two years. Is it possible i have tetanus? how long do tetanus shots last?
You are supposed to get a tetanus shot every ten years. So you might be okay... I would ask a doctor if you start having any symptoms.

My car rear driver side tire wobbles.. plz help?

I have a 2004 Chevy Impala... Recently i put 19 Inch rims on there. Recently, i changed both front wheel bearings(no more noise) and all for break pads. The rear driver side rooter was in bad shape so i changed that as well.

I was driving on the freeway(65mph) and noticed the rear driver side tire is wobbling really bad. I tired to call the guy that fixed it for me but no answer. Is there any reason why that is happening?

it started doing that after i changed the Rooter. I know it is not the rims because it drove well before i changed the rooter.

I don't have as much money to take it to a shop. I don't really know how much they will charge me for it..

Any ideas will be helpful. Thank youMy car rear driver side tire wobbles.. plz help?
like the other one said make sure the lugs are tite, get out your 4 war or tier iron and make sure i almost lost a tire one timeMy car rear driver side tire wobbles.. plz help?
It sounds like your lugnuts are loose. Problem is that if you drive on loose lugnuts long enough, it will make the holes in the rims bigger and then you must replace the rim in order to tighten the lug nuts down.
Check to see if your lug nuts are tightened to specs. Sounds like they may be loose.

Oh, and for future reference, it is brake rotor, not break rooter.
    lug nuts loose

    Changing hub assembly bearrings?

could anybody please explain if you know how to change the hub assembly or bearings on a 96 dodge stratus 4 cylinder 2.0 liter vehicle?Changing hub assembly bearrings?
This model uses a hub and bearing assembly, which is a fairly easy and straight-forward replacement process. It uses a sealed bearing, so there is no worry about greasing the bearings (couldn't do it even if you wanted).

    Remove the wheel,

remove the caliper (2 bolts hold it on),

    remove the rotor,

then loosen the 3 bolts that hold the bearing assembly onto the spindle.

Installation is reverse order, but I don't know the torque specs for tightening the bolts, a call to your dealer may get an answer for these, but more likely to get an answer if you go there and buy the parts from them (about $135 for the hub and bearing assembly from the dealer) doesn't hurt to ask them for a discount, either worst they'll say is no. A repair manual from your local parts store will also give you the torque specs.Changing hub assembly bearrings?
First, is it front or rear, also do you plan on replacing the bearing races also? Most bearing need to be 'pressed out', this requires a bearing press, large vise or other improvised tool. The job is not easy and unless you have the proper tools, place to work and a desire to get really greasy I would recommend taking it to a shop. I know having work done by shops are expensive, questionable and most don't have loaner cars, but picture this; you get everything taken apart and realize you haven't the ability or equipment, now how hard is it to get the mechanic to come to you. Excuse my pointing out all the negative aspects but I've been there, it is more costly than doing it right the first time, plus you don't have to deal with the 'nasties'.

    best of luck.
I would suggest you get a CHILTONS manual at the auto supply or your library may have one. There is also a HAYNES book available. see which you prefer. Cheaper than doing the job wrong and much cheaper than a shop.
You can do what those guys said or you can try and buy 2 new bearings which come grease already. because you're gonna need parts cleaner to cleaner your old bearings
first find out if it has ABS or not, if you have not worked on cars before i dunt recommend u tackle this as a do it urself

im about to do it on my 2000 neon, my bearings at the back are gone, all of them

so basically if its at the back

u jack the car up, take wheel off

remove dust cover off the center of the drum (assuming they are drum brakes) then, remove the drum itself, there should be a big nut behind the dust cap, take that off and the whole hub assembly comes off

then u can just replace the bearings, but theres a special way to do it

My new bearings for my skateboard are acting kinda weird.?

I recently got new bearings when my luckies were constantly locking up for some reason, so I got Reds Bones bearings.

Basically, whats happening is 3/4 of the wheels are perfect, but the fourth one seems to spin ok, but the other wheels shake to the left and right perfectly, just have to rotate the deck for them to shift. This fourth wheel actually requires a small amount (very little) bit of force to make the wheel shift.

its like it has a little bit of a sticking problem almost

i dont understand why its doing this, maybe its just how the bearings are in position but i cant change it.

the luckys that were really screwed up and that i had to replace did this with one of the wheels, but on a much larger scale.

Will this lead to problems with the wheel spinning in the future? or is this normal. My new bearings for my skateboard are acting kinda weird.?
You might have a bent axle. The wheel may have a defect in the hole alignment. There maybe a burr or rust on the axle. The bearings may not be seated in the wheel correctly. My new bearings for my skateboard are acting kinda weird.?
well when i got new bearings it didnt happen to me but when you bought those did you keep the wheels because if so you may just need new wheels if not you might need to get them wet and then dry them and put them back in the whhel so if this helped i was glad to help.

I have gas in my oil and need help are my rings and bearings still good?

My question isnt how it got there. It went through the rings, the gas was poured in the carb to prime the fuel pump. my fuel pump is good, my carb is good. Also It flooded it because i have a highrise intake and big carb also have a cam etc, and used the old spark plugs to attempt to test the engine. To much gas, not enough spark, flooded it. The thing is, is that i never managed to start it although i turned it over a good bit, i was wanting to know how likely it is that my bearings and or rings are messed up? thats the question.... Im praying that new spark plugs and an oil/filter change fixes the problem, im also planning to buy a high performance distributor/coil/cap. Please .let me know what you think. Thanks alot. K.C.I have gas in my oil and need help are my rings and bearings still good?
diablo you need to do a compression test to see if the rings are all good. a tester should run around 25 dollars or so more for better quality type. then you have the motor cranked 5 vevelutions each cylinder , writing the numbers you get. the variation should be less than 15 lbs or so any that read drasticly different should be rechecked and then noted. much lower would be blown rings. ps you dont prime a fuel pump pouring fuel into an engine thats just priming the cylinders.

www.mycarandineedhelp.com its free and its meI have gas in my oil and need help are my rings and bearings still good?
    Just cleaned everything Drain and run a air hose in the oil plug%26gt; with oil fill off it will dry out the gas%26gt; Fill and run%26gt;
Don't go completely off my source because im just a garage mechanic with no schooling, but i wouldn't think the rings and bearings would go bad, the only thing i know of that causes that is substances such as metal shavings from old parts, ect. getting in between the bearings and scraping them up.
I would replace the rings to be safe, i doubt it hurt them but id rather be safe than sorry.
probably washed down the rings not a big problem you will have to crank it until compression comes up without feeding it anymore fuel crank it a few times to get oil back into the rings make sure you are up on number one on the compression stroke if you have spark it should fire and run bad for a while then get better set timing

How do i change the hub bearing on a 4 wheel drive chevy trailblazer?

i have a 2003 chevy trailblazer i need to replace the wheel bearings on and i would like to know if there is a diagram or a video that would give me the steps to do thisHow do i change the hub bearing on a 4 wheel drive chevy trailblazer?
Take off your brake caliper and the mount for it. Slide the rotor off of the hub. Disconnect the wiring that goes to the ABS system. Remove the large nut holding the axle shaft in the hub. There should be three or four bolts on the inner side of the spindle that hold the bearing on. Take them out and you should be able to carefully work the bearing loose and pull it out. Slap it back together in reverse order. Make sure you buy a Timken brand bearing. It's not the worst job in the world, but it's also not one you want to do every year because you bought a cheap bearing. How do i change the hub bearing on a 4 wheel drive chevy trailblazer?
try you tube or google it the basic way is to put the vehicle on safe jack stands and remove the parts needed to completely remove the rotor then remove the wheel bearing then clean the hub and repack with recomened grease then reinstall in reverse order do not over tighten the nut holding it on the spindle

Can someone explain how to work out bearings with distances?

e.g. a plane flies 100km from point A on a bearing of 060 degrees to point B then it changes it's direction on a bearing of 195 degrees and flies fro 120km to point C what is the distance and bearing between points A and CCan someone explain how to work out bearings with distances?
The problem is solved using Trigonometry and Pythagoras. First draw a rough triangle and drop a perpendicular from the position A which should be at the top. work out the distance from the position B to the position where the perpendicular cuts the base (B-C) and the height from base to position A. The distance from A to C is then worked out by applying Pythagoras to the distance the position where the vertical cuts the base to the height and you have the distance from A to C.Can someone explain how to work out bearings with distances?
You can use Law of Cosines and Law of Sines for this solution, but breaking the vectors into components may be more comfortable:

    100 @ 60掳 = 50鈭? @ 0掳 + 50 @ 90掳

    120 @ 195掳 鈮?- 115.91 @ 0掳 -31.058 @ 90掳

    AC = 29.307 @ 180掳 + 18.942 @ 90掳

    AC = 34.896 km @ 122.88掳

Problems with defective wheel bearings in 05 Ford Escape?

My Escape started making a noise at about 35,000 miles. At the time the dealership said it was the tires. I replaced the tires. The noise did not change at all and now has progressively worsened and now they are telling me the right, left AND center wheel bearings need to be replaced (at my expense since now the car has 42,000 miles). They did say the bearings are still sealed and there is no water damage and no other obvious damage. I think they must be defective and Ford should replace them as from what I understand it would be very unlikely for all 3 to just go out at 35,000 miles. I'd like to know if Ford has addressed this problem for anyone else and also if anyone has any ideas on how to make Ford provide the parts and repairs at no cost to me.Problems with defective wheel bearings in 05 Ford Escape?

When it was recommended to replace the tires at 35000

miles %26amp; that did NOT solve the problem, you should have let the service dept. know this IMMEDIATELY.

It seems unusual (to me) that you would replace tires that soon, but I have no idea as to what kind of driving conditions you have.

Waiting, to complain, for another 7000 miles %26amp; an expiring warranty was not a wise decision on your part.

    Motorbike Steering Head Bearings...?

I'm fairly experienced when it comes to taking cars to bits - How easy will I find it to change the upper and lower steering head bearings on a Suzuki RF900 R, and a BMW F650 Strada?Motorbike Steering Head Bearings...?
not hard at all,if the stock bearings are ball bearings the upgrade is a Timken tapered roller bearing! Have to change the races as well but its a big improvement! I did all my bikes like this and also put a zirk fitting in the neck so I can grease the bearing.Motorbike Steering Head Bearings...?
    1 remove seat

    2 disconnect battery

3 remove petrol tank ( to avoid damage) or cover with thick blankets

3 slacken off and release handlebar clamps DO NOT REMOVE YET.

4 Jack up and support the front of the bike lifting the front wheel and forks clear of the ground You need 8 inches of clearance

5 Slacken off and remove brake calipers and all clamps holding brake pipes tie up out of the way.

6 lable and remove all cables from the front wheel; horn anything on the forks.

7 support front wheel ( this is going to take the weight of the forks soon)

8 undo and remove the handlebars ( individual clip ons) Tie up on frame wrap in cloth to protect fairing.

9 Slacken TOP pinch bolts on top yoke of forks,

10 Slacken centre bolt nut and using hide or rubber mallet and a drift KNOCK the top yoke upwards away from the forks and release it from it's seating.

11 Remove centre nut and keep spacers and shims in the order they come off Remove top yoke and keep shims spacers in the order they came off.

    12 remove the top bearing

13 with help of a couple of mates support the forks and with the rubber mallet tap the centre pivot to break any seal and remove the whole assembly ensuring there is no cables caught or still attached.

14 store to one side ( you'll need these later)

15 knock out old bearing seats.

16 using a socket from your socket set which is a ';clearance fit'; to the head stock seat new bearing race and pull into place using a long bit of threaded bar and a couple of plain nuts. This is a more reliable method of ensuring they seat square to the frame.

17 seat lower Bearing on centre pivot.

    - replacement is steps 14-1 in reverse order
it is fairly easy- but hammering out the old races can be fiddly. Its harder to replace taper roller bearings. ONce you have removed all the things in the way- forks, yokes etc

Make sure you hammer them evening out and new ones in.

If your fitting taper bearings avoid hitting where the bearings seat. on the taper roller that goes on the lower yoke, hammer on the main body- not the roller part
It is a pretty easy job.

One point you need to insure when you install new bearings. The bearing cups need to be seated against the shoulder inside the steering tube of the frame. I use a .0015'; thick feeler gauge to check for a proper seat against the shoulder.

    Use a good waterproof grease.

    God Luck
The bearings and races should always be changed together as a set.

Pounding the races in and out of the frame shouldn't be a problem.

Remove %26amp; install the race on the sterring stem can be a project, but do-able with your experience.

How do I know the bearings are bad?

I have a 350 in my vehicle (I believe it's a run of the mill engine, year is approx. 1984) and I believe the bearing to be bad. At first I thought it was the oil pump, but have been lead to believe other wise. The symptoms are low oil pressure once the engine warms up (and I am running 20/50 weight with an added qt. of lucas oil) and a knocking noise that accompanies the low oil pressure. I have changed the oil pump once to a high volume oil pump and that did not resolve the issue. How do I know the bearings are bad?
A lot of engines get rebuilt by people who are less than knowledgeable.

He may have told the truth.

Don't try to fix just the knock, because the WHOLE rebuild was probably shoddy.

Either rebuild the entire engine or buy a new ';crate'; motor from GM.

parts department. For MY money, the crate motor is the best way to go.How do I know the bearings are bad?
Hope everything works out well the second time around!

My left front wheel bearing just started making a strange noise and acting like it didn't want to go when I pressed on the accelerator. A mechanic can tell you for sure - just go to one you trust. It sucks being a woman and mechanics think they can pull crap on you and sell you stuff you don't need.
It's hard to tell without hearing the sound but it sounds like piston rod bearings. It can be repaired and it's easier in some cars than others. A lot depends on how easy it will be to take the oil pan off, as the bearings are accessible through the bottom of the engine.

If you decide to have this repaired, it's probably a good idea to replace the main bearings as well. The main bearings support the crankshaft and are probably worn if your rod bearings are worn. The main bearings will also be accessible with the oil pan off.
there are cam, rod, and main bearings in a engine, not enough info, and what idiot told you to change the oil pump
A knocking sound and low oil pressure when warm are almost a certain sign of either rod or main bearing problems. If the rest of the vehicle is in good shape, you should be able to get a rebuilt engine installed for less than $1500. That might beat the crap out of buying another car and taking on new financing.
Sorry, I though you were talking wheels. I had oversized tires on my car and wore out the bearings. Felt like I was driving on speed bumps.
It's most likely main bearings. The crank will need to be polished or turned and new new bearings installed. $250 if you do it yourself.
listening to you it sounds like you know the main bearings are bad but need to confirm it.

As your engine idles just lightly give the motor some gas you should hear the rods rattle when you lift off the gas and you can decide which one it is by removing and grounding each spark plug ( if you haven't done this Don't it can be dangerous if you don't know how.) the point is if your rods are knocking you need a new engine

How to change rear Pinion Bearing ?

my rear end is making a lot of noise. I took it to a local mechanic and was told that the Pinion flange is shot , the differential bearings are shot and possible driveline carrier bearing noise noticable. Can anyone help me with the procedures to replace these items or is it best to just find a used rear end and do a complete swap ?How to change rear Pinion Bearing ?
This is a job that even most certified mechanics don't do. Mostly driveline specialty shops. As much of an art form as a skill. Main tools that are required that the average DIY'er would not have are precision measuring equipment known as dial indicators, which are rather expensive. Unless you have a hard time finding a used rear end, that would probably be the way to go. If not, then a driveline shop as mentioned before. A Dana/Spicer authorized repair facility would be preferred. Here is an article that covers this, in case you should decide to try, and/or for further info.

take it to a shop and let them do it as you need special gauges to do it and if you can find a used rearend in the junkyard that is also an option.
This is not a task for the home mechanic. Major job with specific tools not worth owning for a single application. Do the used rear end job.

    Wheel wobbles? Whats the issue?

My mom has a 1994 Toyota Tercel, 4 door. She flipped it the other day, and managed to do very minor damage. After fixing the body work done, and getting new tires, we noticed that her rear wheels wobble. I can put my foot on the top of the tire and wobble the entire rim and drum brake assembly. Someone suggested wheel bearings, and someone else suggested axle bearings. Any way I can tell what precisely it is, and what would be an estimate of cost to fix? I am slightly mechanically inclined, how hard would it be (and what tools would be required) to change such as wheel bearings and/or axle bearings?Wheel wobbles? Whats the issue?
If the play is in the rear wheel bearings you are lucky. They are the old fashioned type and can be repacked and adjusted. Take off the brake drums, clean all of the grease off of the bearings, inspect them to be sure there is no damage. When they are clean and dry they should turn very smoothly in the races. Repack the bearings with a quality wheel bearing grease. Then reassemble the lot and tighten the nut until all play is just removed. Spin the drum a few times and check the adjustment again. Put in a new cotter pin and you are done.Wheel wobbles? Whats the issue?
sounds like a bent axle hub

probably need to replace the whole back hub

(the main axle from support out)
u need a whole new axle

What do bearings on a scooter do?

Do they make the ride smoother? How often do you have to change them and what is the best brand. What do bearings on a scooter do?
    Which bearings?

There are bearings on the wheels to allow the wheels to turn.

There are bearings on the steering to allow the handlebars to turn side to side, and there are bearings inside the motor to allow the motor to run smoothly.

You should only have to change bearings when a part is no longer turning smoothly such as wheels, or if there is to much play (side to side motion).

Good Luck and Ride SafeWhat do bearings on a scooter do?
they let the wheels spin easily timken is a great brand i wouldn't think you'd have to change them often they are sealed
The bearings where? If they are on the wheels, they reduce friction between the axle and the wheel. They need to be repacked about every 5000 miles and sooner if you are running 10'; or smaller tires.
they keep your wheels from locking up. they are there for the wheels to move freely and so they run smooth. You don't want metal to metal contact when your moving. Just keep them greased up and you should be fine.
BEARINGS OR WHEEL BEARINGS AS THEY ARE CALLED DO MAKE IT RIDE SMOOTHER AND NO YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO CHANGE THEM IF THE Y ARE SEALED AS MOST ARE ON SCOOTERS
There are bearing in different parts. However, you probably talking about wheel bearings. They are packed in grease and are around the wheel. They help the wheel to spin with less friction. Some bearing packs are sealed and may need to be replaced once in a while usually for under 100 bucks. Some can also be greased, it is a pretty important thing and should be done everytime you change the oil or every other time so you don't forget.
Like wheel bearings? You shouldn't have to change them unless they're broken. Basically they allow the wheels to move while still connecting them to the frame. You can tell if their busted by jiggling the wheel and seeing if there is any play.
bearings are used in almost everthing that moves. bearings are used as a surface for something to roll on . i dont know what bearings on this scooter you are refering to but i can tell you that most need grease and in time some need to be changed.

in some cases a bearing set is sealed and so you have to buy a new set or in other more common systems one or two ball bearings can be removed and replaced.

what ever bearings your asking about its the same a visual inspection of them looking for worn ones is the best way to tell.
